Argentiera Beach: useful information & how to get there

17 aprile 2025 3 minutes read

The Beach of Argentiera is located in the northwest of Sardinia, between the'Island of Asinara and Alghero, in the province of Sassari.

È formed by 3 adjacent coves that together constitute the Spiaggia dell'Argentiera: Spiaggia Piccola, Cala dell'Argentiera and Terza Cala dell'Argentiera.

The beach has mixed sand and gravel, both sandy and rocky bottoms, and crystal clear sea. The color of the sand tends to gray due to dust from minerals extracted from the rock in the past.

1. Useful information

The beach è has free access and does not è require a reservation to enter. It has a capacity of about 1000 people distrituted among the 3 coves.

.

È there is a parking with direct access to the beach via a flight of steps. It is not è allowed to stay with campers or caravans.

.

On the beach there are some services such as bars, restaurants, toilets, and umbrella and sunbed rental.

The beach è also suitable for families as the shoreline remains shallow and suitable for children.

2. How to get to the beach

Arriving from Alghero by car è you can follow the SS291 northward which will take you to the beach in about 40 minutes.

The route has the same duration coming from Sassari, following the provincial road 18 westward.

From Porto Torres è on the other hand, you need to take the SP93 southward, and then join the SP18 westward. You will be at your destination in about 35 minutes.

Buses are also available, such as the Line 732 that will take you directly to the beach.

3. History of the beach

The Argentiera Beach is named after the historic silver mine that has been active since Roman times and exploited until 1963.

Around the mining activity arose a village of miners, who lived there for generations, contributing to the growth of the settlement.

The Argentiera Cove and its still-present pier were used for loading and unloading ores then transported on boats.

After the closure of the mine, the hamlet è been partially abandoned, but some industrial buildings, such as the laveria and warehouses, are visible and testify to the mining past.

The entire area è today part of the Geominerary Park of Sardinia.

4. Argentiera's other beaches

The coast of Argentiera features high cliffs interspersed with small coves with crystal clear water.

Between these beaches on the coast we recommend that you visit

  • Porto Palmas: another small cove similar to Cala dell'Argentiera surrounded by rocks.
  • Porto Ferro: a longer beach with fine sand and shallow waters.
  • La Frana: wonderful cove, but difficult to reach via a dirt path.
  • Lampianu: the northernmost beach among those mentioned, with an unspoiled character. It can be reached by descending a very steep flight of steps.

5. Tips and suggestions

Argentiera Beach, like many other beaches in the area, tends to get crowded especially during the high season.

To find space both on the beach and in the parking lot, we recommend arriving during the first half of the morning.

6. Activities in the area

Directly on the beach è you can rent pedalò and canoe to explore the coast.

If you want to do some trekking, starting from the beach è you can climb to the top of the cliffs to admire the view from the top.

In addition, the mine è become an open-air museum called Open MAR, which can be visited without needing a ticket.

If you are in the area during the vacations, we also recommend taking a'boat trip to explore the coast.
