Mount Coltignone: An Easy Hike in Lombardy

Mount Coltignone is a mountain a few kilometers from the city of Lecco and is 1,479 meters high. It is an ideal destination for trekking enthusiasts as it offers several paths to take to reach its summit.

How to Reach the Summit of Mount Coltignone?

There are three main routes that allow you to reach the summit of Mount Coltignone:

  1. The easiest route starts at Piani dei Resinelli and leads to the summit along a relatively wide and not very steep path through a forest of beech trees within Valentino Park.
  2. The Paolo Spreafico trail begins at the Piazza refuge, near the San Martino chapel. After a long traverse, it follows the Val Verde and connects to the previous route a few meters from the summit.
  3. The GER trail, recommended only for experienced hikers, begins just below the summit of Corno Medale and has a final section equipped with chains to ensure greater safety during the ascent.

II charming loop tour between Piani Resinelli and Mount Coltignone is suitable for hikers of all ages and can be hiked in any season of the year. It averages 5 hours total for the hike, so, it is perfect even if you only have half a day at your disposal.

The starting point for this hike is in Piani Resinelli, a town in Valsassina located at an altitude of 1,200 meters and reachable in just over an hour from Milan.

The road to Piani Resinelli is easy, although it has a few hairpin bends towards the end. Once there, you will find a large parking lot that tends to fill up quickly during busy periods (so, we recommend that you reach the resort in the morning). Near the parking lot, there are a few cafes and bakeries where you can buy a sandwich for your trek.

From here, start your trek, heading towards the Adventure Park. Continue by following the Hikers' Trail. Along the trail you will be greeted by a wide meadow with spectacular panoramic views.

After a short stretch, you will reach theentrance to Valentino Park, from which Mount Coltignone is only a 45-minute walk at a leisurely pace. The initial climb may seem challenging, but it is the only steep section you will face. After that, the trail continues along the ridge, offering spectacular viewpoints. Following the signs along the trail, you will eventually reach the summit of Mount Coltignone.

The view from the summit is simply stunning, embracing the Lecco shore of Lake Como, the city of Lecco, Lake Annone and the other Briantei Lakes. On the crest of Mount Coltignone, you will also find some suitable areas to spread out a picnic rug and enjoy a meal in the open air. In addition, a more challenging route for experienced hikers starts from the summit and leads all the way to Lecco.

To reach the Belvedere from Mount Coltignone, you will simply backtrack slightly along the trail and then follow the marked direction to the right. This section is well marked and the Belvedere is visible from a distance. It is a panoramic terrace overlooking the lake, offering an unforgettable view.

The trail is completely flat (apart from the initial uphill section), but still impressive, giving a taste of the mountains just over an hour away from Milan.

Along the way, you will also find the Villa Gerosa House Museum, dedicated to the Grigne Mountain Group. Keep in mind that it may be closed at certain times.

If you want aneven easier alternative, you can choose to visit only the Belvedere without reaching the top of Mount Coltignone.
