Visiting Asinara: how to get there and what to do on the island

The National Park of Asinara, is located in the Northern Sardinia in the province of Sassari and è a'protected area since 1997, following the closure of the prison present on the island. 

The island can be visited independently, following some rules, or accompanied by park operators. In case you choose an organized excursion, you will always be accompanied by Authorized Operators.

To enter Tavolara Island è you need to pay a disembarkation fee at a cost of 5€ per person in the period between June and September, and 2.50€ in the other months of the year.

1. How to get to Asinara

To get to Asinara you can choose between organized boat tours or 2 ferry routes.

Leavingfrom Porto Torres you will arrive at Cala Reale in about 1 hour and 20 minutes of travel time. Tickets can be purchased on the website of the company Delcomar that provides the service, or directly at the Porto Torres maritime station.

Leaving from Stintino you will arrive at Fornelli in about 30 minutes of travel time. In this case, there are several companies operating on the route and tickets can be purchased on their respective sites.

Before boarding the ferry è it is necessary to leave your car in the parking lot at the port because it is not è possible to bring your own car to Asinara Island.

2. Exploring the island by boat

To visit Asinara you can opt for a boat tour with a skipper of half or full day.

Departing from Stintino you will take a few bathing stops to do snorkeling and swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Marine Protected Area.

On this day trip you will also have lunch included with drinks and beverage of your choice. The price starts from 90€ per person and varies according to the season.

3. Exploring the island by sailboat

A similar option to the previous one è the sailing boat. Again, you will start from Stintino and explore the coast of the Marine Protected Area making some stays for swimming in the sea.

The group excursion lasts for one day, lunch with drinks included in the price, which starts from 90€ per person.

4. Exploring the island at sunset

This sunset boat excursion departing from Stintino will allow you to get to know the island of Asinara in different colors.

In this case you can choose whether to opt for a group or private excursion with different prices depending on the season.

During this outing you will be offered an aperitif on board and you can also dive into the sea at one of the dedicated stops.

5. Exploring the island by jeep

An alternative way to explore Asinara by land è through organized jeep excursions. These excursions can be group or private and the price starts from 70€ per person.

On landing in Fornelli by ferry, you will set off on a day excursion that will take you to explore the main attractions of the island.

During the excursion, you will be accompanied by a Hiking Environmental Guide who will describe the landscape and history of the Island.

6. Exploring the island on foot

For lovers of trekking, the Asinara National Park offers different trails that you can take to explore the island.

These paths do not develop in height and do not involve great elevation changes, but they run along the sea or wind inland. In this way they will allow you to discover the island's wilderness.

Due to the high temperatures that can be reached in summer, we recommend carrying out these routes during the low or mid season.

7. Exploring the island by bicycle

Unlike other motor vehicles, on the ferry to Asinara'Asinara è you can board your bike. This è in fact one of the best ways to explore the island by land.

If, on the other hand, you do not want to bring your own bike from home, è you can also rent it from one of the rental stores in Fornelli and Cala Reale.

8. Exploring the island by electric car

Another very sustainable way to visit the island of Asinara è via electric car. You can in fact rent one after disembarking from the ferry at Fornelli and Cala Reale.

The island of Asinara has 1 main road connecting it from north to south, along which there are recharging areas where you can stop to recharge your car in case it is needed.

9. Exploring the island by bus

Exploring Asinara Island by bus è an alternative and economical idea that you might consider.

The excursion has a day duration, departing from Fornelli. During the outing, you will explore the main areas of the island, and along the way you can listen to the spielings of the Environmental Guide who will accompany you along the way.

10. What to see on the island

Boat, dinghy, jeep or by any other means you choose to visit Asinara Island, we suggest some locations that you absolutely cannot miss. 

The beaches

Of the various beaches on Asinara, some are worth seeing as they are unique.

These include Cala d'Arena Beach, Cala Sant'Andrea Beach and the Cala di Punta La Cornetta.

Locations to see

There are not many attractions on the island, but among them we recommend the Prison Memory Observatory, the Marine Animal Recovery Center and the Royal Palace in Cala Reale.
