Short guide to get to Piani di Bobbio and experience the Mountains just a stone's throw from Milan

The Piani di Bobbio is a destination that has become increasingly popular in recent years: two hours from Milan, it is the ideal place to go for a day in the snow, have lunch in a mountain hut and even take your first steps on the slopes.

In fact, Piani di Bobbio is home to several ski and snowboard schools for young and old, and thanks to the large number of slopes for beginners, it is the perfect place to learn to slide on snow.

Piani di Bobbio: how to get there by car

Getting to Piani di Bobbio by car is not possible, but don't be discouraged: by car you can drive up to the valley station of the Barzio-Piani di Bobbio gondola, 800 meters above sea level, and then you can take the last 900 meters of the ascent right with the gondola that will take you up to the 1,700-meter altitude.

Next to the bottom station of the gondola is the P1 parking lot where you can conveniently leave your car during the week. On the other hand, if you plan to go to Piani di Bobbio on the weekend, you have two options:

  • arrive very early in the morning. The gondola opens at 8 a.m. in high season and at 8:30 a.m. in low season, and normally at that time the parking lot is already full
  • choose to stop at one of the other four parking lots available in the village of Barzio and then go up to the gondola with one of the free shuttles available.

The reference address for the P1 parking lot is Cabinovia di Barzio, Via S. Eustacchio, 23816, Barzio (LC).

Getting to Piani di Bobbio from Lecco

Starting from Lecco, the fastest route is the SS36DIR, also known as the tunnel that passes under the city. When you arrive in Ballabio, at the tunnel exit, simply continue to the right on SP 62 , which moves away from the lake and up into the mountains.

The directions to follow are first to Valsassina and then to Barzio or Piani di Bobbio.
The road is rather steep but well-marked and paved all the way, making it passable even by town cars.

Getting to the Piani di Bobbio from Milan

To get to the Piani di Bobbio from Milan, the first step is to take the SS36 Lake Como and Spluga highway north to Lecco.

From here, the directions are the same as mentioned above: drive through the tunnel under the city to Ballabio and then follow the signs for Valsassina, Barzio and Piani di Bobbio

Piani di Bobbio: how to get there by train

To get to the Piani di Bobbio by train, the recommended route is to arrive at the FS station in Lecco, which is well connected by trains departing from Milan Porta Garibaldi and Milan Centrale stations for €5.20 one way.

Once you arrive in Lecco, to reach Piani di Bobbio you will have to take a public bus of the SAL Linee Lecco company, on the D35 line to Barzio. The bus stops in the village, and you will still have to use one of the free shuttles to reach the bottom station of the gondola.

Please note: the free shuttles are only guaranteed on weekends and holidays.

Getting to the Piani di Bobbio with the Snow Bus

The Snow Bus is the transportation service from Milan to the Piani di Bobbio, operating every Saturday and Sunday organized directly by the ski resort management.

It is a great option for those who live in the city and want to spend the day in the snow and do not have a car or simply do not want to worry about parking, traffic and driving back after a tiring day on the slopes.

The Snow Bus departs from Milan's Piazza Lanza - Foro Bonaparte and Piazza 1 Maggio in Sesto San Giovanni, in front of the subway station, and the return service leaves at 5:30 p.m. from the bottom station of the gondola in Barzio.

Several packages are available that include bus transportation and ski pass or gondola ticket for those who prefer to enjoy the mountains without necessarily skiing. All packages and prices can be purchased online at the Piani di Bobbio website.
