13 September 20246 minutes read

Livigno, with its enchanting location among the majestic Rhaetian Alps, is a popular tourist destination in all seasons. However, even if a rainy day is forecast during your visit, fear not! This picturesque Alpine resort offers a wide range of indoor activities that will allow you to enjoy the beauty of the area without getting spoiled by water falling from the sky.

1.Visit the MUS! - The Museum of Livigno and Trepalle

On a rainy day, the MUS! is a must-see to learn about the history and culture of the region. The museum is located right in the center of Livigno, and inside you can find archaeological artifacts, photographs, and historical documents.

One of the highlights is the exhibition on the nature of the Alps where you can explore the biodiversity of the area's typical flora and fauna, including through interactive experiences.

A section usually popular with adults and children alike is the winter sports section that explains how Livigno has become a top destination for mountain and snow sports lovers.

For fans of history and traditions, on the other hand, an in-depth look at Walser culture, an ethnic people of Germanic origin who left an indelible mark on the history of the area, could be very interesting. The museum offers a fascinating perspective on the life and traditions of the Alpine communities, from traditional costumes to handicrafts.

2. Relax at the spa

? The region's thermal waters are famous for their healing and rejuvenating properties. The SPA at the Lac Salin hotel in Livigno offers several indoor pools, saunas, spa treatments and massages, all in a relaxing and peaceful setting, surrounded by mountains and nature that offers breathtaking scenery even when it rains.

3. Poolside fun

For a rainy day of fun, Livigno's indoor pool is a perfect choice. Equipped with slides, whirlpools, and water features, the indoor pool will keep both children and adults happy. You can swim and relax in a cozy and safe environment while enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding mountains through the large windows. The Aquagranda center offers a Slide & Fun area where little ones and adrenaline fans can enjoy slides and water games, and a Wellness & Relaxation area for a spa experience with whirlpool, sauna, steam room and massage rooms.

And if you don't know what to choose? Just don't choose! Combination tickets are available to access both the waterslide area and the wellness area to experience the relaxation and fun of a Livigno vacation even on a rainy day.

4. Indoor shopping

Livigno is a duty-free zone, which means it offers a wide variety of duty-free stores. If it's raining, why not take advantage of this opportunity to do some indoor shopping? From fashion and sports stores to boutiques selling souvenirs and local products, there is something for everyone. Even the little ones will enjoy the weather hunting for toys and video games.

When it comes to shopping, however, beware of the deductible: there are limits for purchases in the duty-free zone and they are different for each type of merchandise. The limit updated to 2023 is €300 of purchases per person over the age of 15 and €150 per child or youth under the age of 15. In addition to these limits by value, there are also restrictions for particular types of goods and they are:

  • Cigarettes: 200 pieces (a 10-pack carton)
  • Cigars: 50 pieces
  • Cigarettes/cigars (with a maximum weight of 3g per piece): 100 pieces
  • Smoking tobacco: 250 g
  • Undenatured alcohol of 80° or more or alcoholic beverages of 22° or more: 1 liter
  • Alcohol and alcoholic beverages less than 22°: 2 liters
  • Still wines: 4 liters
  • Beer: 16 liters

It is important to note that these limitations refer to the date of border crossing, not the date of purchase. If, for example, you take a three-day vacation to Livigno, you must comply with these limits when you cross the border to leave the non-customs zone even if you made purchases over several days.
The limits are cumulative, so if there are, for example, three adults in your car, you have a total of up to €900 in allowance.

5. Family dinner with local specialties

A rainy day is the perfect time to enjoy a family dinner at one of Livigno's typical restaurants. The local cuisine offers delicious traditional dishes, such as pizzoccheri, polenta, local cheeses and tasty mountain meats. In a cozy and familiar atmosphere, you can enjoy the delicacies of Livigno's cuisine and make new gastronomic discoveries.

6. Visit and dine at Europe's highest brewery

Continuing with gastronomic experiences, a rainy day is the perfect time for a visit and tasting menu dinner at Livigno Brewery, Europe's highest brewery at an elevation of 1816 meters.

The tour begins with a quick introduction to the brewery and its history and then continues into the production area, including the 10-hl Kaspar Schulz brewhouse and the areas where the various stages of mashing, hopping, whirlpooling and unloading spent spent spent as feed for livestock take place.

After witnessing the various stages of beer production live, it will also be possible to taste the varieties produced and enjoy a dinner of Italian-Bavarian specialties.

7. Cooking Class: Learn how to cook local dishes

For those who love to cook or would like to learn how to prepare typical Livigno dishes, some local facilities offer cooking classes. Guided by experienced chefs, you can learn the secrets of Alpine cooking and try your hand at preparing delicious local recipes. It's a fun way to learn something new and bring home some of the flavor of Livigno.

Several hotels offer this service, often by reservation for organizational reasons, and it is an activity that is suitable both for couples, to create a moment of sharing and collaboration, learning about each other and helping each other towards a common goal, and for families with children who can put "their hands in the dough" and experiment with new processes and different flavors than usual.
