Two starting points: the Eira Pass and the top of the Mottolino cable car
There are two main points from which the hike to Crap de la Parè can be started: the Eira Pass and the top of the Mottolino cable car.
Crap de la Parè starting from the Eira Pass
Passo Eira is a popular choice for those who want a shorter hike and for those arriving by car from the road from Bormio to Livigno.
Leaving the car in the convenient lay-by at the side of the road, one can take the forest path that climbs northward, marker 134, which should be followed to the destination.
You will almost immediately come across a large wooden cross that marks station number 7 on the way of the cross; the cross is a reference point to make sure you are on the right path, and subsequent crosses will accompany your walk, which will take about an hour and a half round trip.
It is only the first part of the trail that is strenuous because most of the 180 meters of elevation gain is concentrated at the beginning and the rest of the trek is almost flat.
Once you get over the first more strenuous part, then, you can relax and enjoy the view of the Livigno valley on the left and the large pastures dominated by the peak of Mount Crapene on the right.
Just before reaching the destination, the Crap de la Parè, on the right there is a beautiful view of Livigno Lake with its striking colors and reflections typical of high altitude lakes.
Getting to Crap de la Parè from the top of the Mottolino cable car.
If you are starting from the village, if you are already staying in Livigno and do not want to take the car, or if you simply prefer a slightly more challenging route, Crap de la Parè can also be reached starting from the arrival station of the Mottolino cable car.
Once you reach the M'eating point hut, you can continue northeast toward the Eira Pass and intersect trail marker 134. The route, then, is the same as you should follow starting from the pass.
Starting from the Mottolino cable car, the hike takes about an hour and a half one way and about as long on the return but offers mainly two advantages:
- You do not need the car to reach the starting point and to return at the end of the hike
- The M'eating point is the only hut you will find along the way, so you can choose to take advantage of it to refuel with water and snacks or as a place to stop and have lunch after the end of the hike, for a delicious high-altitude lunch in front of a spectacular view
The breathtaking landscapes of Crap de la Paré
The views that open up before you as you approach Crap de la Paré are simply stunning.
On yoursummer hike, you will see lush valleys, colorful flowers, and pastures that look like green carpets.
In winter, on the other hand, you will be greeted by a world of whiteness, with snow-covered trees and shimmering expanses stretching under blue skies.
The summit of Crap de la Parè offers a 360-degree panorama of the Alps, with peaks rising in all their grandeur and deep valleys opening up below you.
It is a place where nature reigns supreme and the beauty is immeasurable.
The landscape in winter is a snowy paradise where glittering snow covers everything, creating a magical and enchanting environment.
An adrenaline-pumping experience: Crap de la Paré by snowmobile
In winter, it is also possible to reach Crap de la Parè bysnowmobile, with which you can get to points that are complicated to reach during summer hiking or mountain biking and difficult to reach even using ski lifts.

Recommended equipment for the hike to Crap de la Parè
Before embarking on the hike to Crap de la Parè, it is important to be well prepared. Here is a list of recommended equipment:
- Durable and comfortablehiking shoes or boots, especially recommended for beginners and children, to protect the ankle joint in case of small falls
- Weather-appropriate clothing: light layers in summer, warm and waterproof layers in winter. In the mountains, it is always important to dress "onion-style" and remove the warmest layers before you start to sweat too much to avoid wetting the clothes closest to your skin. One of the risks, in fact, is to sweat too much, get your clothes wet and then end up with wet clothes touching your skin when temperatures drop.
- Hiking poles to help yourself, especially on the first part on the steepest incline
- Light backpack with a good supply of water: there are no drinking fountains along the trail to the Crap de la Parè, and much of the flat section is between grassy pastures; this means that, especially in summer, much of the trek is in full sun with no possibility of shelter
- Hat and sunscreen to shelter from the sun in summer, cap and gloves for those who choose to venture out in winter
- Sunglasses: in the mountains, the sun is stronger than in the city and it is important to protect your eyes as well; then in snow, the glare is even stronger and dark glasses with strong UV protection become essential
The hike to Crap de la Parè is one of the most classic and must-do experiences for anyone visiting Livigno and will remain etched in your memories forever.
The breathtaking views, the feeling of connection with nature and the thrill of reaching the summit are elements that make this adventure unique.
Whether you decide to explore the Crap de la Parè in summer or winter, you will be rewarded with a feeling of wonder at the unspoiled beauty of the Alps.
Get ready, set out, and be captivated by all that this extraordinary mountain has to offer.
